Mary Elizabeth Thompson

December 12, 1918 - November 29, 2023

With heavy hearts, the family of Mary Elizabeth Thompson (nee Pinder) announce her peaceful passing, at Brightshores Health Systems in Owen Sound, on Wednesday, November 29, 2023, just shy of her 105th birthday. Beloved wife of Morgan Thompson, who predeceased her in 2004. Dear mother of the late Joan Lee, Joyce Smith, Larry Thompson (Pat), Murray Thompson (Debbie), and David Thompson (Ann). Adored grandmother of Cathy, Nancy, Michelle, Melanie, Amanda, Matthew, Nicole, and Danielle. Proud great-grandmother of Paige, Rachael, Caitlin, Ciera, Brady and Charlie. Fondly remembered by her many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her siblings Roy, John, Bob, Don, and Jean, and by her parents Frederick Clayton and Elizabeth Jane Pinder (nee Pringle).

Wednesday, November 29th, 2023 marked the end of an era and the loss of the Matriarch of our family. Mary Thompson was of a generation that lived through the war, that worked hard, that their word was their bond; they suffered silently while sacrificing much. She was a humble, stoic, (quietly) strong, physically active, healthy, resilient, educated, patient and a dedicated family woman. She was a centenarian (13 days shy of her 105th birthday), a teacher, a farm wife, a mother of 5, grandmother of 8, great grandmother of 6. She was an animal lover: animals were drawn to her, birds landed on her and stray animals appeared at the farm where they lived out their lives. Mary was an amazing cook, award winner for her pies, cakes, pickles and jams. She had a large garden (1/4 acre) which she tended. She had an amazing green thumb evidenced by her beautiful flowers. She was involved in her community and a proud member of the Chatsworth Chapter of the Woman’s Institute and later in her life the Rural Rubies branch of the Red Hats. In quieter times, she wrote poetry, enjoyed music and was an avid reader, especially books of Grey Bruce. It is impossible to document all the accomplishments of this remarkable woman. She had a life well lived, she was loved and she will be missed and remembered with happiness, amazement and appreciation.

Cremation has taken place and arrangements have been entrusted to the Garafraxa Hill Funeral Home, Chatsworth. A Celebration of Life service will be held in the funeral home chapel on Sunday, December 10, from 1:00 – 3:00pm. Moments of remembrance, officiated by Cathy Lee, will commence at 1:00pm, followed by lunch and refreshments. Spring inurnment at Colpoy's Bay Cemetery. If desired, donations to the Brightshores Health System- Owen Sound Hospital, or the Salvation Army of Grey-Bruce, would be appreciated by the family.
